The MINI is sold through an independent MINI retailer network in over 70 countries around the world. Many of its members already enjoy a long-standing cooperation with the BMW Group as BMW retailers.
The MINI is the direct successor to Sir Alec Issigonis' 1959 classic, which was produced until 2000. The new generation adds state-of-the-art technology, modern levels of safety, quality and reliability to traditional MINI values, such as optimum interior space within compact exterior dimensions. Driving fun was, of course, also a key criterion when developing the MINI product range: with its long wheelbase, short overhangs and low centre of gravity, MINI is a byword for unadulterated go-kart feeling.
The launch of the MINI Convertible in 2004 continued this philosophy, with the same outstanding design, the same characteristic proportions, the same excellent agility, the same functional flexibility, the same space-saving cleverness. In short: the same MINI under a different roof. The 2nd generation MINI Convertible models hit the market in 2009, offering even more unique open-air driving thrills.
The MINI Clubman takes this phenomenon to new levels. As with its historic predecessors the Austin Mini Countryman, the Morris Minor Traveller and the Mini Clubman Estate, it represents a remarkable realisation of the "shooting brake" concept (modified coupé fitted with an estate-like rear) – rounded off with astounding levels of customisation and typically unrivalled driving thrills.
A brand-new type of MINI − larger, more versatile and anything but run-of-the-mill − was unveiled in 2010: the MINI Countryman. Never before have five people been able to have so much fun on four wheels. With its off-road abilities, the new MINI Countryman combines go-kart feeling with a crossover concept for the very first time. In short, the MINI Countryman is the perfect car to get away from the drudgery of everyday life.
The MINI was a truly European development, with design and engineering taking place in UK and Germany.
The MINI is built to the stringent BMW Group quality standards at the BMW Group plant in Oxford, England.
MINI has its unique position on the small-car market. It offers class-leading technology (for example in terms of safety) compared to other small cars as well as high levels of agility and style.
In recent years, the official MINI CHALLENGE races series, which features specially developed, extra-racy MINI, have been held in Germany, New Zealand and Australia. The series is, of course, taking place in 2010, too.
Since 2002, the John Cooper Challenge has been held in the United Kingdom, with two racing locations also in France.
Since 2004, there have also been events in Belgium, Germany, Russia, the Middle East and Switzerland.
No plans have been made so far for starting any rallying activities.
The MINI John Cooper Works CHALLENGE is, quite simply, the fastest MINI made so far. Intended for track use only, this high-performance MINI with full racing spec is guaranteed to set the adrenaline pumping.
Please note:
The MINI John Cooper Works CHALLENGE is not available from MINI retailers.
The most prominent MINI event is MINI United, a racing and partying bonanza that extends over several days and attracts thousands of MINI fans from all over the world. The first event of this type took place in 2005 at the Santa Monica race track in Misano (Italy), and was followed two years later by three days of on- and off-track thrills at Circuit Park Zandvoort in Amsterdam.
The most recent event took place on 22-24 May 2009 in the United Kingdom.
Click below to check out the MINI United page on Facebook − with all the facts, tracks and drivers.
Yes. Applications should be sent in writing to: Plant Tours, Communications Dept., BMW Group Plant Oxford, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 6NL, United Kingdom.
The MINI is a successor to the classic Mini, which first appeared in 1959. The MINI Cooper was launched in 2001, with the MINI Cooper S and the MINI Convertible models following in 2002 and 2004 respectively.
The 2nd generation MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S, with more powerful engines than their predecessors, a revamped design and a wealth of new features, were launched in autumn 2006.
The MINI line-up was extended further in autumn 2007 with the launch of the MINI Clubman. This stunning combination of design, customisation and agility is now available in two variants.
In summer 2008, two more 'serial thrillers' took to the streets: the MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman. This came about as a result of BMW taking over John Cooper Works, the long-standing tuning partner, in early 2007. These two models were the first MINI fitted with John Cooper Works performance parts to roll off the series production line at the Plant Oxford manufacturing facilities. The line-up was expanded in 2009 to include the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible.
The 2nd generation MINI Cooper Convertible and MINI Cooper S Convertible hit the road in 2009, and will be followed by the MINI One Convertible in 2010. With their "grown-up" design, high-performance engines, range of body/soft top colours and reinforced safety features, they raise the bar even further as regards unique al fresco driving thrills.
In mid-2010, a brand-new type of MINI was unveiled: the MINI Countryman. The first MINI with ALL4 four-wheel drive, four doors and four seats − and it's four metres long, too.

All MINI models offer extremely high standards of both passive and active safety.
Active safety:
The MINI is fitted with ABS, EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) and CBC (Cornering Brake Control), Brake Assist and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).
Passive safety:
The MINI looks after its occupants – award-winningly so, in fact: in April 2007, the MINI Cooper received the highest possible score of five stars in the Euro NCAP Crash Test with regard to adult occupant safety.
A number of different measures were introduced in order to meet this target, including the use of extremely stable load-bearing structures and an extremely rigid occupant compartment, highly efficient restraint systems and above all the excellent use of the intelligent deformation pathways, which channel energy in the event of a collision.
All MINI have six airbags as standard.

Passenger airbag deactivation is available as an option for all MINI produced after 1 July 2004.
ISOFIX mountings designed to perfectly accommodate all types of BMW Group child safety seats are standard for rear seats in all MINI and MINI Clubman produced after November 2006.
A passenger airbag deactivation is also available as an option, in case you want to attach a child seat to the front passenger seat.

It's changed from a passive to an active system. Whilst the active roll-over bar on the 1st generation MINI Convertible was a prominent design feature, it's now tucked away behind the rear seats. This not only emphasises the new-look silhouette of the MINI Convertible, but also improves driver visibility to the rear.
However, it still offers the same outstanding protection: when the electronic sensors detect a loss of balance, it springs into action within 150 milliseconds, with the front belt tensioners and head-thorax airbags also activated; when things are running smoothly, it remains out of sight.
Yes. The soft top of the MINI Convertible can be opened and closed at vehicle speeds of up to 30 km/h.
Yes. The MINI Cooper Convertible and MINI Cooper S Convertible soft top is available in Black. A soft top in Hot Chocolate or Denim Blue with silver effect is available as an option.
Unfortunately not. Roof designs are available for MINI models with a hard top only.
The air resistance of and weight of the MINI Convertible is higher than that of the MINI hatchback. This increased air resistance affects acceleration and top speed accordingly.
All MINI Convertible have a near-unbeatable range of factory-fit options and retailer-fit accessories. There are also option packages available, a bundle of options that offer excellent value for money.

John Cooper Works tuning products guarantee even more get-in-and-go feeling in all MINI Convertible variants. There's a tuning kit, for example, which provides added under-the-bonnet verve in the MINI Cooper S Convertible. Or 18-inch alloy wheels for even more swiftness underfoot. And then there are exterior extras, interior add-ons and chassis trimmings for driving thrills right down to the ground.
In the MINI Convertible, 125 litres of luggage space are available when the soft top is open. When the soft top is closed and the 50/50 split folding rear seats are upright, 170 litres are available. This increases to 660 litres when both rear seats are folded down.

Easy Load does exactly what it says on the tin. The rear of the MINI Convertible soft top can be reverse-folded upwards and the tailgate is folded down – and hey presto: generous storage access that makes packing and unpacking a piece of cake.
What's more, the tailgate doubles up as a handy storage shelf, or even as an outside seat for an average-sized adult.
The Through Load function is just one of countless examples of the clever use of space in the MINI Convertible. Fold the rear seats down and a space appears to provide access between the boot and the rear cabin area. So transporting longer objects is no problem at all − even on those rare occasions when the soft top's closed.
All MINI Convertible models offer extremely high standards of both passive and active safety.
Active safety:
All MINI Convertible models are fitted with ABS, EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), CBC (Cornering Brake Control) and Brake Assist as standard.
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) also comes as standard with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) available as an option. All three functions help to ensure ideal traction during cornering, with the balance of comfort, active safety and agility altering according to which settings are activated.
Passive safety:
The MINI Convertible offers outstanding impact protection for all occupants. It has exceptional structural strength and crumple zones that make optimum use of the available space as well as two front airbags and two head-thorax airbags.
The active roll-bar is also crucial, of course. This ultra-light, yet ultra-sturdy aluminium construction is located behind the rear seats, and is only visible when required: if the electronic sensors in the MINI Convertible detect a loss of balance, the active roll-over bar springs into action immediately. Within 150 milliseconds, it shoots outwards, with the front belt tensioners and head-thorax airbags also activated.
The MINI Convertible is child-friendly, too: ISOFIX child seat attachments are a standard feature, enabling two ISOFIX-compliant child seats to be attached easily and securely to the rear seats.
For more information on safety, click below to visit the MINI Convertible online showroom.

Part of the Original MINI Accessories range, a vast range of roof flags and other designs are available for all MINI Clubman models.
Based in part on the door concept used by the historic predecessors of the MINI Clubman, the doors are an ideal balance of design and functionality. The eye-catching and practical Splitdoor 'replaces' the tailgate at the rear, emphasises the broad look of the MINI Clubman, and also opens wide to allow bulky objects to be loaded with ease.
The Clubdoor on the right-hand side not only bolsters the appearance, but also ensures tangle-free access to the rear seats.
A striking asymmetric appearance was one of the mainstays of the MINI Clubman design concept, and this is reflected by the single Clubdoor.
Not really. If you reverse a MINI Clubman into a parking space, you need 54 cm space to open the Splitdoor. To open the tailgate of a MINI, you need 39 cm space, so the difference isn't really that great.
A huge range of John Cooper Works products are available for all MINI Clubman variants. These include a tuning kit for the MINI Cooper S Clubman, sound enhancements, aerodynamic add-ons, suspension refinements and exterior and interior accessories galore.
All MINI Clubman have a near-unbeatable range of factory-fit options and retailer-fit accessories. There are also option packages available, a bundle of options that offer excellent value for money.

In the MINI Clubman, 260 litres of luggage space are available when the rear seats are in the upright position. This can be increased to 930 litres by lowering the rear seats. Incidentally, our empirical studies (well, sort of) have shown that there's enough room in the rear of the MINI Clubman for an average-sized adult man to have a comfortable night's sleep – with his legs ever so slightly bent, of course.
Stowage space can be further optimised in a number of ways. An optional storage pack is available, comprising a compartment in the decor surface on the passenger side, a storage net in the front passenger footwell, a floor net, a 12-volt socket in the boot, a carry hook and a foldable transport box.
There's also an optional flat luggage-compartment floor, which provides a perfectly even surface when the rear seats are down, with additional room in the "hollow" created underneath it.
Additional space for light objects is available in the pockets on the inside of the front doors and the Splitdoor as well as in the nets on the backrests of the front seats.

The MINI Clubman offers a wide range of features for passive safety in every respect, fulfilling legal requirements in all countries in which it is marketed. And it offers the prerequisites for optimum results in all crash tests relevant the world over.
A number of different measures were introduced in order to meet this target, including the use of extremely stable load-bearing structures and an extremely rigid occupant compartment, highly efficient restraint systems and above all the excellent use of the intelligent deformation pathways, which channel energy in the event of a collision.

The name John Cooper has been inextricably linked with MINI for nearly fifty years. He gave his name to the Mini Cooper, which was launched in 1961, and was instrumental in the rallying successes in the following years, most notably the three victories of the Mini Cooper S at the Monte Carlo Rally of 1964, 1965 and 1967.
John spent many years producing conversion and tuning kits for the Mini and was personally involved in the development of the first-generation MINI that was launched in 2001.
John Cooper Works was the authorised tuning partner of MINI for many years, providing top-quality kits and a vast range of other accessories. In 2007, BMW took over John Cooper Works, which gave rise to the MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman − the first series-production MINI to contain John Cooper Works performance parts as standard.
The technical data of all John Cooper Works models can be found in the online showroom.
All pricing information can be found in the John Cooper Works online showroom.
First off, there's the enhanced performance, thanks to the more powerful engines, sharper brakes and modified exhaust system. Then there's Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) as standard − unique among front-wheel drives. All three functions help to ensure ideal traction during cornering, with the balance of comfort, active safety and agility altering according to which settings are activated.
The cockpit's got a lot to offer, too, with standard features including a sport steering wheel in leather, striking red gear knob, anthracite headliner and Piano Black fascia. There's also a Sport button, which ensures more rapid response between pressure on the accelerator and actual acceleration as well as a throatier sportier sound.
In-depth information on standard and optional equipment, option packages and accessories can be found in the John Cooper works online showroom.
One example of the many John Cooper Works accessories is the John Cooper Works aerodynamic kit, which is available in a version adapted to suit each individual model. A radiator grille with perfectly-angled slats, low-lying side skirts and streamlined front and rear aprons ensure a speedier drive, lower fuel consumption − and a breathtaking look as well.

When the soft top is closed and the 50/50 split folding rear seats are upright, 170 litres are available. This increases to 660 litres when both rear seats are folded down. Further, a space between the folded-down rear seats − otherwise known as the Through Load function − provides access between the boot and the rear cabin area, which facilitates the transportation of longer objects.
Packing and unpacking the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible is also made much easier by the Easy Load function. When the rear of the soft top is reverse-folded upwards and the tailgate is folded down, a generous opening is created that helps to accommodate larger, bulkier objects.
In the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman, 260 litres of luggage space are available when the rear seats are in the upright position. This can be increased to 930 litres by lowering the rear seats. As with the MINI John Cooper Works, the standard-feature glove compartment can be enhanced by a cooling function in conjunction with the air-conditioning option.
All John Cooper Works models offer extremely high standards of both passive and active safety.
Active safety:
All models are fitted with ABS, EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), CBC (Cornering Brake Control) and Brake Assist.

All three functions help to ensure ideal traction during cornering, with the balance of comfort, active safety and agility altering according to which settings are activated.
Passive safety:
In addition to six airbags in the MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman and four in the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible, all models offer a wide range of other features for passive safety in every respect, fulfilling legal requirements in all countries in which they are marketed. And they offer the prerequisites for optimum results in all crash tests relevant the world over.
A number of different measures were used in order to meet this target, including extremely stable load-bearing structures and an extremely rigid occupant compartment, highly efficient restraint systems and above all the excellent use of the intelligent deformation pathways, which channel energy in the event of a collision.
The MINI John Cooper Works Convertible has optimised roll-over protection in the form of the active roll-bar This ultra-light, yet ultra-sturdy aluminium construction is located behind the rear seats, and is only visible when required: if the electronic sensors in the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible detect a loss of balance, the active roll-over bar springs into action immediately.
John Cooper Works models are child-friendly, too: ISOFIX child seat attachments are a standard feature, enabling two ISOFIX-compliant child seats to be attached easily and securely to the rear seats.

At MINI, the reduction of CO2 emissions and fuel consumption is a top-priority issue. A number of features have been introduced to reduce fuel consumption, including
- on-demand technologies, including a volume-regulated oil pump, a switchable water pump and electromechanical power-assisted steering (EPAS) instead of hydraulic steering;
- friction-optimised lightweight engines;
- a twin-scroll turbocharger in the MINI Cooper S, MINI Cooper S Convertible and MINI Cooper S Clubman, which is more fuel efficient than compressor-based technology;
- fully variable valve timing in the engines of the MINI Cooper, MINI Cooper Convertible and MINI Cooper Clubman;
- improved aerodynamics.
Recycling begins with the monitored return of the MINI to an approved take-back point or dismantling facility. Contact your MINI retailer to locate these approved places which can issue the certificate of destruction necessary for finally deregistrating the MINI.
Recycling begins with the neutralisation of airbags and other pyrotechnical components. Then the air conditioning system refrigerant and the brake fluid are extracted, the cooling water and the engine and transmission oil are released and the fuel is pumped off. The different liquids are poured into separated containers and then processed or recycled in specialised plants.
Once the MINI has been drained of fluid, those parts and materials that are suitable for recycling are dismantled. The remains of the dismantled MINI are reduced to palm-sized pieces at a shredding plant and then sorted. Plastics, textiles, iron and non-iron metals will be recycled further.
Click below for more information on how the MINI is recycled.
MINI developers aim to ensure that the environmental effects caused by the MINI are kept to a minimum throughout its entire lifespan. Efficient, environmentally friendly recycling begins during the development and production stage of every MINI.
- During the development phase, constructors assess all components with regard to their recycling potential and make a note of this on the component sketches
- Recycling concepts are devised for large components (e.g. the bumper trim or the cockpit).
- Carefully selected materials reduce the product mix, thus avoiding the use of non-recyclable substances.
- Suitable joining techniques guarantee pure separation of the components during dismantling.
- "Life Cycle Assessment" case studies ensure systematic evaluation of the effects that components have on the environment.
- Virtual and real-life dismantling analyses ensure that each MINI achieves the targets that have been set.
- Findings obtained from the dismantling analyses are passed on in training courses and in detailed documents to all parties involved in the recycling process.
-These measures guarantee the following for all MINI models:
- All pyrotechnical components (e.g. airbags and seatbelt pretensioners) can be triggered via the same interface.
- All liquids (e.g. oil, fuel, cooling liquids, brake fluids, air conditioning system refrigerants) can be removed quickly and completely via a spot drilling or drain plug.
- Plastic components weighing more than 200 g are marked with the materials they are made of.
- Large plastic components that are suitable for economical recycling can be dismantled quickly and easily.
- The resources required can be minimised by using recyclates in manufacturing.
Click below for more information on how the MINI is recycled.
- The four wheel arch trims of the MINI are made of 100% recycled PP-EPDM plastic.
- The outer cover of the instrument panel and the shelf below constitute a so-called one-material system consisting of ABS/PC. Thanks to a joining technique that has been optimised for recycling, these parts can be dismantled quickly and recycled economically.
- The cover of the loading shelf and the seat panelling are examples of pure PP materials. The cover of the loading shelf is fastened by means of an expanding rivet only, and can be detached from the MINI within seconds. After a side screw has been loosened, the rear panel of the front seat can be levered from its clip and rivet joints. These components can then be recycled completely.
