MINI’s new Double Clutch Transmission combines two partial transmissions into one single housing. One clutch is responsible for the even gears (2,4,6) while the other controls the uneven gears (1,3,5,7 and reverse). While driving, the “second” clutch is open and ready to engage the next gear without interruption of pulling power – resulting in smoother, more seamless shifts.

Technically, it’s both. The actual gear selection by clutches is similar to a manual transmission but is controlled electronically without the need for a clutch pedal – like an automatic transmission. Gear shifts can also be controlled in Steptronic mode, where you can move the shifter forwards/backwards to select a gear.
MINI’s Double Clutch Transmission is strategically engineered and refined to offer comfort in city driving situations. It even features a Crawl Function to enable more comfortable idling in stop & go traffic.
MINI John Cooper Works variants feature MINI’s traditional 8-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission with the added features of Steering Wheel Shift Paddles and Launch Control!
MINI’s Double Clutch Transmission is built for Front-Wheel Drive vehicles and is not compatible with the All-Wheel Drive Clubman and Countryman. These models feature MINI’s efficient 8-speed Steptronic Automatic transmission as standard.
